Interview: Genairo Nvilla
Bringing the rhythm and lifting the moods and feet of their fans, Genairo Nvilla is coming in hot with the support of the likes of No Art and ANOTR on their hypnotic sound. Nvilla speaks to us about his newest release, ‘Que Rico’, ready to enter the room, and how important creating connections on the dancefloor, staying true to your sound and being present really is.
Q – You bring a unique sound, blending Afro-house, Latin influences and groovy rhythms into a fresh, energetic experience. What are your inspirations behind using these specific sub-genres?
A – I’ve always been drawn to rhythm first. Drums are what made me fall in love with dance music, and over the years I naturally started combining the sounds that inspire me the most. African percussion brings a certain raw energy, Latin music adds warmth and emotion, and house music ties everything together on the dancefloor.
I never sit-down thinking, “I’m going to make an Afro or Latin record.” I just follow what feels right. If the groove makes me move, I know I’m heading in the right direction.
Q – You’ve received a lot of support from No Art. What has this meant for your journey as an artist?
A – It’s meant a lot because the support has always felt genuine. They believed in my music before we ever released anything together, and that kind of trust gives you confidence to keep following your own path.
Working with No Art has also shown me that staying true to your sound is the best long-term strategy. They never asked me to fit into a trend. They encouraged me to keep developing the music that feels authentic to me, and that’s something I’m really grateful for.
Q – You have an upcoming release called “Que Rico”, ready to hit the scene. What were your inspirations behind the track and what should your listeners expect from it?
A – ‘Que Rico’ is one of those records that instantly makes you move. Pre-save Que Rico.
I’m always searching for sexy yet hypnotic grooves. I like building a simple theme around a vocal and letting the rhythm do the rest. For me, the drums are always the foundation.
Whenever I’m making music, I always ask myself: “What would I want to hear if I was standing in the crowd?” I’ve always been drawn to records that have a sexy, feminine energy. That’s simply my taste, and it naturally finds its way into my productions.
It’s been amazing to see the reaction already. The track has received early support from DJs like ANOTR, was premiered by Pete Tong during ANOTR’s BBC Radio 1 takeover, and has been getting an incredible response every time it’s gets played.
So, if I had to describe what people can expect in one sentence… expect hips to be moving.
Q – What is your vision as a DJ? Is there a certain energy you want to create on the dancefloor when you perform?
A - For me, DJing is about creating connection. I want people to forget everything that’s happening outside the room and become completely present in the music.
I always play what I feel in that moment. Every set tells its own story, and I want people to become part of it. If they leave the dancefloor feeling lighter than when they arrived, then I’ve done my job.
